Whether you're planning to do project yourself or hiring a professional to it, call 811 before you start. Homeowners often make risky decisions about whether or not they should get utility lines marked on their property, but every digging job requires a call – even small projects like tree and shrub planting or lawn maintenance. Utility line depth and locations vary. Digging without calling can result in service disruptions, harm you and those around you and could potentially result in you paying fines and repair costs. To reduce risks, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the use of 8-1-1 as the national abbreviated telephone number for use by residential and commercial consumers to provide notice of planned excavation activities. Calling 811 before your digging project will get underground utility lines marked for free and help prevent accidental dig-ups. Please remember to call 8-1-1 before you dig.
